Overview

In partnership with the World Surf League (WSL) and the Surf Conservation program at Conservation International, Progression 2025 spotlighted startups actively fundraising that had the potential to make a meaningful impact on ocean conservation.

As a dedicated platform for ocean investing, the event gave investors the opportunity to hear from six carefully selected companies that aligned with the missions of Surf Conservation and WSL, each offering a unique and impactful business opportunity rooted in protecting the health of our oceans.

Keynote And Featured Speakers

We were honored to welcome legendary waterman and Red Bull athlete Kai Lennyas the keynote speaker for Progression 2025. Known globally for his fearless approach to big wave surfing and his deep commitment to ocean health, Kai shared how athletes, entrepreneurs, and investors can unite to drive meaningful change for our planet’s oceans.

The program also featured remarks from Dr. Sarah Kapnick, former Chief Scientist at NOAA, and a fireside chat with World Surf League CEO Ryan Crosby and Olympic surfer Kanoa Igarashi added another highlight, offering an inside look at the intersection of sports, coastal resilience, and innovation.

The program featured a forward-looking discussion on the future of ocean investing, focused on how catalytic capital can accelerate the blue economy. Moderated by Dr. Sarah Kapnick, Head of Climate Advisory at J.P. Morgan and former Chief Scientist of NOAA, the panel brought together leading voices in ocean innovation to examine the technologies reshaping the ocean-tech landscape, the capital models enabling scale, and the areas where innovation and investment are most urgently needed.

2025 Venue & Setting

Progression 2025 took place on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, in Huntington Beach, California, during the Lexus US Open of Surfing. The Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel hosted the full conference programming, including keynote presentations, startup pitches, and panel discussions. After the event, guest had the opportunity to attend an evening dinner and networking reception at The World Surf League VIP Space.
